Nature’s Vineyards Organic Wine Council recognizes the trend in organic farming and the added benefit of taste, value and environmental impact. Our council sorts through the organic and sustainable wines of the world and presents to you the best we can find.
OUR PROCESS
The process of selection at NV is a rigorous one. In order to be considered for NV, the wineries must meet these criteria:
Organic farming, whether it is certified, in process of, or the broader definition of sustainable. Family or independently owned. Control of vineyards, if not deemed of the estate. Minimal intervention winemaking.
From here, our tasting panel (comprised of established, certified, reputable wine professionals) will verify its technical data and certificates of organic farming. Then we will taste. As our saying goes here at NV, …does it overdeliver? A simple question you might ask yourself, but one of the truest questions we need to ask. We apply our vast and varied experience in the wine business. Our combined experience is applied and we make our decision. Wines that make the cut will have descriptions like….energy, alive, fresh, balanced, layered. Tastes will entertain your palate and hit keynotes like your favorite song. The wine will change from the first sip to the last glass.
The evolution of flavors will rotate as air and temperature awaken the wine. Memories will be created, and meals will be remembered. Along with the taste of the wine is the way it was made. Made by Nature, not by a corporate committee bound to shareholder profit. Wines with soul, created by the guiding hand of the vineyard manager and winemaker will make your body feel better too. The absence of commercial and synthetic herbicides and pesticides helps your overall health and a sensible diet.
Our History
How Did Nature's Vineyards Organic Wine Council Come To Be?
- Michael Douglass January 2022
Nature’s Vineyards beginning concept came about as a product of Covid and what I thought was my retirement in early 2019. During the few months of life’s covid restrictions and isolation I realized retirement was not an option yet.
As always I continue to read numerous wine articles and reviews in order to keep abreast of current wine trends. I found the sustainable movement growing rapidly in both the vineyards sand in wine making. I became fascinated by the many positive results in both the quality and purity of organically grown wines. It’s obvious that organically grown wines are the future of the industry.
My younger son Josh has always wanted me to write book about my 55 plus year career in the wine business sharing my relationships and stories. Josh, being an attorney and fervent environmental activist was a natural fit. In the very beginning Josh and I spent hours planning and communicating our ideas and goals. Josh began his passion with the environment working With the Long Island Neighborhood Network, Long Isianland’s largest and most active environmental and public advocacy organization.
Next we brought in Michael’s brother-in-law as our Chief Operations Officer, to handle all the details of organizing our business. Jeffrey Britz was added to our team. Jeff, as you will note in his bio has had a very successful varied business career and proved to be a wizard in start up companies. We feel fortunate to have him on board.
Not only did Jeff join our team but he brought with him Diane Harris Brown. Diane is a former director of the James Beard Foundation and a true leader of the New York culinary environment for over thirty years, She was recently honored by Spoons Across America (the recipe for healthy America). During her career in management at the James Beard Foundation, she interacted closely with culinary luminaries including Julia Child, Jacques Pepin, and Paula Wolfert. Indeed we are fortunate to have Diane on board.
The next piece was a perfect fit. George R. Eldi, owner of Wines by Nature joined the team in January 2022. The name of the store tells it all! It was almost meant to be. Like-minded experienced professional wine lovers, wine and spirit retailers as well as educators who truly believe sustainability is the future. Myself and George lead the wine-tasting counsel.
We can’t wait to share our discoveries with you.
Cheers,
Michael Douglass
